The story behind the songs

Magic Night

Sleeve Notes

Foreword
I’d like to thank everyone who has contributed to the making of this album and to the development of the Paradise Projex over the last couple of years started out as an idea myself, Paul Johnson & Paul Lee. I’d like to Ralph Tee for believing in the concept, an idea before hearing any tracks and took the leap of putting out the EP in a marketplace which wasn’t really supportive of mass physical sales. We are continually building on the quality of the music we enjoy to listening to. Without a doubt a number of DJs and radio stations have been part and parcel of the success so far and I’d like to thank them too. Also, I’d like to pay special tribute to Judy La Rose who passed away during the making of this album and is featured on two tracks Magic Night and Call Me By My Name, which will be dedicated to her memory.

Paradise Projex was like a kid’s return trip to a  familiar neighbourhood. It was everything I remembered so well! Catchy lyrics, infectious groove… and loads of heart. The project was a musical family ‘cookout’! Phil Edwards assembled a great team to revisit the gospel-soul traditions that framed his early years., and I was glad to be along for the ride!

Paul Johnson

In the 1980s, I had the pleasure of meeting Phil Edwards, a founding member of the influential UK gospel group Paradise. Even then, Phil showcased his immense talent as a producer, keyboardist, and songwriter. While many of his peers were content to mimic American music, Phil strived for excellence by drawing on a diverse range of musical influences and cultural experiences.

Phil played a significant role in shaping the foundation of contemporary gospel music in the UK with his heartfelt melodies and thought-provoking lyrics. His early work reflected a young man with a rare combination of depth, skill, and talent. Over the years, Phil has continued to make his mark as a musical director for pop bands, touring musician, and producer for various artists. However, his roots in Paradise will always hold a special place in his heart.

I am thrilled that Phil has curated The Paradise Project, a collection of his work that showcases his artistry. This project has reignited his passion for music and offers us a chance to appreciate the talents of this experienced and versatile creator.
